Sheffield is an international centre for research in sports technology. It also excels in the development and innovation of new sports products. The hub for this knowledge and expertise is located in the Sports Engineering research group at the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science, Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).
Research is linked to business through the SportsPulse initiative, a unique private-public partnership driving the development of the regional sports industry. SportsPulse provides expert R&D services to sports products companies and has recently helped develop innovative new products for Zen Oracle, Planet-X Bikes, and Golfbone.
Sheffield is also home to the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI), a national programme improving access for the disabled to public and private fitness centres. A key part of the initiative is a new fitness equipment R&D programme in partnership with SportsPulse and equipment manufacturers to raise the standards and capabilities of equipment.
