Celebrating two years to go to the games

Published Date: 30 Jun 2010

Sheffielders can look forward to a host of activities, events and challenges coming their way next month to celebrate two years to go to the London 2012 Games.

Details of what's on in Sheffield to celebrate the London 2012 Open Weekend 2010, (23 25 July), are out now.  And they are all completely free.

If you like swimming you could take part in a challenge to swim 2,012 metres.  You can do it in any of the city's swimming pools either in all one go or gradually through the week of July 17 25.

Or why not check out a gig by local musicians?  The Concorde Youth Music and Performance Organisation will take part in a simultaneous mass play of 2,012 musicians all across the UK.  You can see them at 11.30am on the Moor on July 24.

If art's more your thing, why not go to Art in the Park on Sunday July 25?  The event is a chance to create street art with professional artists inspired by the landscape of Middlewood Park.

There's more to see and do, including five-a-side football, exercise classes, organised walks and free health checks.  And there is also the Council's organised programme of summer play activities for children and young people called Go For It.

Cllr Roger Davison, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, at Sheffield City Council, said: "There will be wide range of different sporting, cultural and arts activities people can enjoy here in Sheffield, and more events are being added all the time.

"The London 2012 Open Weekend is a great opportunity to share in the excitement of the Games and to celebrate the two year countdown by challenging yourself to do something new or take an interest to a new level.  Have a look at what's on and join in the big celebration looking forward to the world's biggest and most prestigious sporting event."

With the support of BP, Premier Partner of the Cultural Olympiad and long-standing supporter of arts and culture in the UK, the London 2012 Open Weekend takes place every year until the start of the London 2012 Games on July 27 2010.

The London 2012 Open Weekend is now in its third year.  The previous two have enabled over a million people to take part in sport, arts and cultural events across the length and breadth of the UK.
