For the third year running Sheffield was chosen by British Swimming to host the prestigious world event, which encompasses three other legs that take place in China, Qatar and Mexico.
Top names from the world diving elite competed, including medal winners from the Beijng Olympics, Olympic hopefuls for 2012 and members of the GB diving squad. On a fantastic final day Tom Daley beat the Olympic champion to land a silver medal in the 10m Platform and Sheffield's home grown talent, synchronised divers Ben Swain and Nick Robinson-Baker battled back to win a bronze medal in the 3m men's synchronised event.
Commenting on the success of the FINA diving event, Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, Cabinet member for Streetscene, Culture and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said
"Hosting the FINA diving for the third year running has been a great experience for the city. We have had visitors from 15 different nations from across the world and have been able to showcase the facilities and expertise we have in the city.
"We spoke to a number of teams over the weekend about considering Sheffield as a venue for their international training camps in the lead up to 2012, including some of the strongest and most successful diving nations, and we look forward to hosting some of their teams in the future."
UK Sport has invested heavily in attracting international events to the UK in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics to prepare athletes, officials and volunteers for working at major competitions. Sheffield has directly benefited from this by hosting the FINA diving from 2007-2009.
Kelly Richardson, Young Event Volunteer Development Officer and a volunteer herself said
"The Young Event Volunteer scheme has been developed by the Youth Sport Trust and gives young people the opportunity to develop the key skills needed to deliver major sporting events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games. FINA diving is just one of the events that the Young Event Volunteers in Sheffield have worked at to help them gain real experience of a major event.
"During the FINA Diving event, our volunteers worked on the administration side of the event, helping with ticket and programme selling, gaining valuable experience that will contribute to a BTEC Level 2 in Event Support."
As well as the benefits for athletes and volunteers, Sheffield has also benefited from a boost to the economy with almost 200 athletes, team staff, officials and organisers attending the event as well as over 800 spectators. Hotels throughout the city were near capacity this weekend, heavily contributing to the expected 20 000 hotel beds that will be booked in the city this year a sharp increase from 9000 three years ago.
