South Yorkshire Lighting the flame for Sport

Published Date: 07 Aug 2008

Are you the next South Yorkshire Olympian or Paralympian?

South Yorkshire has a proud history of producing Olympians, such as Barnsley's athletics star Dorothy Hyman, Doncaster's three time Olympic Taekwondo player Sarah Stevenson, Rotherham's 800m silver medallist Peter Elliott, and of course Sheffield raised and educated, Lord Sebastian Coe.

South Yorkshire will have several Paralympian's representing the region at Beijing 2008. Barnsley's Sue Gilroy will compete in the table tennis, Doncaster born John Hall and Rotherham's Kevin Hayes will both be pushing for a medal as part of the GB Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team, and Sheffield's Jill Fox will be a vital part of the GB Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team

One of the ambitions of the partnership is to use the games to inspire the public of South Yorkshire to get involved in sport.

This summer there are lots of opportunities for young people to get sporty, and maybe become inspired to be South Yorkshire's next Olympian or Paralympian
