SHEFFIELD TO WELCOME HOME WORLD CHAMPION JESSICA

Published Date: 28 Aug 2009

Sheffield is to welcome home its newest World Champion, Jessica Ennis next week, with an event that the whole city is invited to join in.

City leaders are inviting Sheffielders to show their pride in Jessica at a celebration event in the Peace Gardens on Tuesday September 1.

The 23-year-old from Woodseats won Britain's first ever World Championship heptathlon gold medal in Berlin earlier this month and now has her sights set on success at the London 2012 Olympics.

Jessica, a former King Ecgbert's pupil, will be welcomed home by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Graham Oxley, at the Peace Gardens where she will receive the city's thanks and congratulations on an open air stage.

The event will be a celebration of Jessica's victory with music, sport and film starting at 2pm and running through to the start of the main event at 5.30pm. This will be followed by a civic reception inside the Town Hall for Jessica, her family and coach Toni Minichiello.

"Jessica is a world beater and we want to welcome her home in style," said the Lord Mayor.

"To become a world champion is no mean feat and she has shown the rest of the world that Sheffield produces real winners. Jessica has done Sheffield proud and we want a celebration that underlines the city's pride in her. This is a great opportunity for Sheffielders to come and share in her success."

Jessica, who still trains in the city as a member of City of Sheffield Athletics Club, will also be presented with a gift on behalf of the city by the Lord Mayor in appreciation of her success.

"Jessica has fulfilled her potential and become the superstar we always knew she would one day become. Sheffield has been with her every step of the way. Her steely determination to be the best is something that will inspire so many young people to live their dream. This is, no doubt, just the start for Jessica, as she prepares for a golden path to the 2012 London Olympics," said Council Leader Paul Scriven, who will also welcome Jessica home.

The Peace Gardens celebration event is scheduled to end around 7pm.

Jessica won the gold medal at the World Championships in a lifetime best performance in the track and field events held over two days to finish on 6731 points, 238 clear of Germany's Jennifer Oeser with Poland's Kamila Chudzik picking up the third place.
