What is RSS?

An RSS feeds allows you to subscribe to specific website content using an RSS reader. By subscribing to the content you can will receive notification that content has been added, as soon as its published without the need to repeatedly to visit the website to check for updates.

RSS  stands for Really Simple Syndication and is simply the method by which you can subscribe to feed based content updates.

How to use RSS feeds?

To subscribe to content you will need an RSS reader.  The reader will check the feeds that you subscribe to an let you see any new content that has been made available via a feed.  There are multiple feed readers available some of which can be accessed via a browser and others as desktop applications.  Web browsers such as Internet Explorer 7, Safari 2.0 and Firefox 2.0 now include RSS capabilities direct within the application.

Using your selected RSS reader, you will have the option to subscribe to RSS feeds when they are available on a website.  This is very similar to bookmarking a website.

When viewing a website that has RSS feeds available, the RSS icon will be displayed to indicate that a feed is available.  Clicking on the icon will take you to the relevant feed content which is what you will subscribe to using your feed reader.
